Ownership:
This collection contains material relating both to Vincent H. Pierce and to Blanche Cascaden. It has been kept together because it arrived as a single collection. We do not know how the original collection was formed or whether any connection existed between these two people.
Biographical/Historical Data:
Vincent H. Pierce was born of English parents in Jamaica in 1878. He immigrated to the United States in 1902, and by 1909 was in Alaska. In the years 1909-1920 he prospected and mined for gold in the vicinities of Fairbanks, Otter, and Livengood, but was financially ruined. By that time, Pierce had married Swedish immigrant Anna L. (Ostling?) and had a daughter to support. He went to work for the Alaskan Engineering Commission in Nenana (1921-22), Anchorage (1922-24), and Seward (1924-1925). He and his wife Nan made their home in Fairbanks in 1926-27, though Pierce worked part of that time in Valdez.
