Abstract:
Collection consists of a typescript of some chapters for a book Dorothy Jean Ray planned to write about the Vasilev-Shishmarev Expedition of 1819-1822. The chapters are composed of translations from the Russian by Rhea Josephson and are arranged as follows: Chapter Two contains the translation of part of The chronological history of all the voyages to the Arctic (Khronologicheskai͡a istori͡a vsi͡ekh "puteshestviĭ v" si͡evernyi͡a poli͡arnyi͡a strany) by Berkh; Chapters Three-Five contain the translation of Hillsen's journal, Journey of the sloop "Good Intent" to explore the Asiatic and American shores of Bering Strait, 1819 to 1822 (Puteshestvie na shliupi͡e Blagonami͡erennyĭ dli͡a issli͡edovanii͡a beregov Azii i Ameriki za Beringovym prolivom s 1819 po 1822 goda); and Chapter Six contains the translation of Capt. Shishmarev's information about the Chukchi (Svedenii͡a o Chukchakh, Capt. Shishmarev) by Shishmarev.

Captain-Lieutenant Mikhail Nikolaevich Vasilev led an expedition to explore the northern coasts of America from 1819-1822. The expedition was equiped with two naval sloops, the Discovery (Otkryie), commanded by Vasilev, and the Good Intent (Blagonami͡erennyĭ), commanded by Captain-Lieutenant Gleb Semenovich Shishamarev.
