Abstract:
The Bertha E. Mason Papers contain photographic prints, an album, and color slides, primarily images of villages and activities along the Yukon River in Interior Alaska. Subjects include barges, churches, hospitals, and Alaska Natives. Locations include St. Stephens Church and the Hudson Stuck Memorial Hospital in Fort Yukon, Alaska. People shown include David Colin, Sophie William, William Sassar, Charley Crow, Dr. Bingham, Lynn Short, Reverand W.C. Files, Dr. Disosway, Jack Havens, Mary Creese, Anne Weitzel, Cliff Everts, Nancy Wilson, Bob Rice, Jim Jackson, Harry Field, Minnie Peter, Samson Peter, Sara Alexander, Marie Irene Peter, Sharon Rose William, Tony Rose, Nora James, Winston James, Winston Moses, Clara John, Margaret Stephen, Silas John, Leah Druck, Maria Thomas, Nina James, Bishop Bentley, A.J. Rowe, Mary Henry, and Marjorie Englishoe. Also included is a small amount of paper material, including identifications for many of the slides, a narration for a slide presentation, correspondence,(1968-1971), and ephemera.
Biographical/Historical Data:
Bertha E. "Bertie" Mason (1899-1975) came to Alaska in 1945 as a missionary nurse for the Episcopal Church. She was stationed in Fort Yukon and Minto for many years. She died on July 21, 1975 in Fairbanks, Alaska. Her cabin at Manley Hot Springs is now a church-owned camp and learning center named in her honor.
