Abstract:
On Side 1, Simon Pletnikoff is interviewed by Ella Mae Warren on December 12, 1971 in Kodiak, Alaska. Pletnikoff talks about his time spent with Dr. Hrdlicka finding archaeological specimens in the Aleutian Islands; burial customs of the Aleut people; Aleut class stratification; bidarkas and baiders; Aleut marital customs;the power of the chief; punishment of community offenders; the avuncular relationship; taboos; Russian starvation of Aleuts; barabaras; Aleut clothing before the arrival of Russians; speaking Russian and Aleut; and an experience he had while in the Alaska Scouts.

On Side 2, Betty Springhill is interviewed by Leanna James and an unidentified male on January 3, 1972 in Kodiak, Alaska. Springhill recounts teaching experiences in Kodiak, including the deaths of two students; BCG tuberculosis vaccinations; military presence on Kodiak; alcoholism and fishing villages; getting on and off Kodiak Island; marital problems; male-to-female ratio; prostitution in Kodiak; STDs; Aleutian Homes; her husband, John Springhill; coming to Kodiak; public water problems; the effects of the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake on Kodiak's buildings; and deaths associated with the earthquake.
