Biographical/Historical Data:
Vide Marie Gaustad Bartlett (1904-1976), the daughter of O. P. and Viole (Lou) Gaustad, was born in Dawson, Yukon Territory. In 1905 or 1906 the family moved to Cleary Creek, near Fairbanks, Alaska. There O. P. Gaustad worked several mining claims, the most profitable of which was 10 Below Cleary. In 1916 Gaustad moved on to the settlement of Brooks in the Livengood mining district, where he operated a tramline, sawmill, grocery store, and the post office. Vide and her mother lived most of each year in Fairbanks, where Vide attended school, and joined O. P. in the summers. The family subsequently moved to Los Angeles, California, where Vide completed her final year of high school and went on to earn a university degree and teaching certificate. She briefly taught in Wrangell, Alaska, and in Washington state before marrying Edward Lewis Bartlett in August of 1930. Their daughters Doris Ann and Susan were born in 1934 and 1940, respectively. Vide became a skilled campaigner during her husband's long political career. Returning to Fairbanks in 1970, two years after her husband's death, she was active in community life and served on the University of Alaska's Board of Regents (1971-1976).
