Abstract:
The Orville George Herning Papers consist of Herning's diaries (1898-1947), which are an excellent source of information on Knik, Wasilla, and the Cook Inlet region, Alaska, and a small amount of correspondence. Also included are photographs (1898-1930), and hand-drawn maps of mining claims. Topics of particular emphasis are mining operations, construction of the Alaska Central Railway, roads, trails, and residents of the Cook Inlet region, and the operation of a trading company.
Biographical/Historical Data:
O. G. Herning (1868-1947) came to the Cook Inlet area of Alaska in 1898 and established himself as a miner and merchant for nearly fifty years. As manager of Expedition No. 4 of the Klondike & Boston Gold Mining & Manufacturing Company, he oversaw the company's claims in Alaska for eight years. In 1905 he opened the Knik Cash Store (later the Knik Trading Company) and became an influential member of the community. In 1917 Herning moved his family and store to the new town site of Wasilla, Alaska. The building he constructed for this business in 1919 has since been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to his mercantile activities, Herning maintained gold claims in the Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska.
