Abstract:
The collection consists of 1386 black and white photograph prints and 5 publications. The photographs were taken by Bill Ray during his time as a contract officer on the White Alice Project and range in size from 9 x 12 cm.-21 x 26 cm. Locations of images in the collection include Anchorage, Aniak, Nome, Tanana, Bethel, Iliamna, Hinchinbrook Island, Clam Gulch, Homer, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Fairbanks, Fort Yukon, Galena, King Salmon, Naknek, Kotzebue, Lisburne, Middleton Island, Kenai, Wasilla, Cape Newenham, Unalakleet, Steese Highway, Kodiak, Sitkinak Island, McGrath, Takotna Mountain, Tin City, Wales, Soldotna, Delta Junction, Nelchina, Glenn Highway, and Candle. Images also include a series of photographs covering the erection of the first prototype 60' parabolic TROPO antenna at Blaw-Knox Plant in Pittsburgh, Penn. Biographical/Historical Data:
William C. Ray (Bill) was born Nov. 3, 1916, in Gough, Texas, to Nason and Fern Cornelius Ray. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1934, and on July 10, 1939, arrived in Alaska. He worked on the docks in Petersburg for the Alaska Steamship Co. and moved to Fairbanks in 1941, where he worked at the University of Alaska and the Glenn Carrington Co. In 1942 Bill Ray moved to Anchorage and, on May 20, 1945, married Frances Pickolick. He worked in Civil Service for the U.S. Air Force as Property Administrator for the White Alice project, from its beginning, until retiring in 1973 to manage his real estate holdings. His work on the White Alice project took him across Alaska. White Alice was a communication system developed by the U.S. Air Force to provide an integrated system for federal, military, and civil agencies as well as the public. White Alice began service in 1956 providing high quality and accurate service to the users. White Alice was the popular name for Forward Propagation by Tropospheric Scatter.
