Abstract:
In March 1984 Kashunamiut School in the Village of Chevak (a Yupik community on the Bering Sea Coast between the Yukon and Kuskokwim River Deltas) hosted a young people's Eskimo Dance Awareness Festival, an event held with the expressed intent of revitalizing Yupik dancing by young people. The Festival involved the entire student body of the Kashunamiut School District. (The Cup'ik people of Chevak are of the Qissunamiut tribe.) Activities included skin sewing, hat making, grass baskets, carving, hunting, butchering and emphasizing the importance of the seal, blanket toss, gathering traditional foods for the potlatch, and making shelters. The main emphasis of the Festival focused on cultural heritage values, such as sharing, respect for animals, respect for elders, strengthening of social ties, and revitalization of dance.
