Abstract:
"The setting for the Rapids Fish Camp Student and Teacher's Resource Book was the 2004 Academy of Elders' Camp sponsored by the Association of Interior Native Educators (AINE). The Alaska Native Elders taught the certified teachers at Hannah Maillelle's fish camp along the Yukon River for two weeks. The focus of the camp was salmon... The camp was designed for participants to learn and adapt Alaska Native Elders' Knowledge to classroom lessons on the traditional lifestyle of Athabascan Indians. This resource book was made to be used alongside the Culturally Based Curriculum Units that were developed by the teachers at the camp and published by AINE. It is designed to be used by students and teachers as a research tool to gain background knowledge about the Alaska Native People. This book does not cover all the Alaska Native People, nor does it describe every group of Athabascans; the book is a starting point for discussion, study, and research. Excerpts, opinions, and stories belong to the Alaska Native Elders who shared the information at the academies. Without the valuable knowledge and giving nature of the Alaska Native Elders, AINE would not have been successful in publishing indigenous curriculum." -- adapted from introduction
