Abstract:
Laurie Sica introduces speakers. Vicky Carr talks about what the speakers will be talking about and introduces Cody Bricker. Cody Bricker reads a selection from Robert Service and talks about the discovery of gold in the Klondike and the people who came to the gold fields, transportation to the Klondike, routes to the gold fields, the Chilkoot Trail, the White Pass Trail, Dyea and Skagway, and some of the objects in the museum. Jennifer Kinney talks about Captain William "Billy" Moore, the founding of Skagway in October 28, 1887, the different names the town had before it was named Skagway, Robert Henderson, Tagish Charlie, and Skookum Jim finding gold in 1896, costs for a ticket from San Francisco to Skagway, Frank Reid, the end of Soapy Smith, Herman Kirmse, Harriet Pullen and the Pullen House, and different ways the miners carried their gold. Jill Thomas talks the White Pass Trail, the beginning of the White Pass Railroad, Thomas Tancred and Michael J. Heney, construction of the railroad, the present-day railroad used for tourists, and lunch boxes and shirt collars from the gold rush period. Missy Bryant talks about the height of the gold rush, the size of Skagway at that time, saloons, gambling halls, prostitution, dance hall girls, music halls, and a few artifacts from the museum. Heather Daniel talks about the first road built out of Skagway, the road between Skagway and Carcross, the Klondike Highway, and a few items from the museum. Heidi Hawkpage talks about life in Skagway, tourism in the summer, population of the town in the summer and winter, tourist attractions, the false fronts on the buildings, the Golden North Hotel, WWII in Skagway, transportation, and celebrations. Natalie Berry talks about tourism, the ferry system, the Alaska Highway connecting them to the Lower 48, transportation during the summer, and the importance of tourism to Skagway.
