Abstract:
The Dickenson Family Photographs consist of 663 images, most of them taken in the Nome and Council regions of Alaska in the first quarter of the twentieth century. They include photos of: the Dickenson family's trip to Alaska aboard the S.S. Garonne in 1899; members of the Dickenson family and their friends engaged in various activities; a number of localities in the Nome and Council regions (Nome, Council, White Mountain, Golovin, Melsing Creek, Mystery Creek, Hastings Creek, Niukluk River); the Adams family; and various room interiors. A number of the photos are labeled "For Book", but no published book in which they might have appeared has been identified.
Biographical/Historical Data:
The photos in this collection likely belonged to Elizabeth Dickenson Adams, born in 1873 in California. As nearly as can be determined from the photo captions, Elizabeth (Lizzie B. Dickenson) arrived in Alaska with her father, Joseph R. Dickenson, aboard the S.S. Garonne in June of 1899. They were accompanied by Rose Dickenson (precise relationship unknown). By 1900 at latest they were joined in Nome by Elizabeth's sister Marie and by Virginia Dickenson (precise relationship unknown). According to the Polk's directories, Joseph worked as a miner around Nome, Alaska, and by 1905 Elizabeth was working in a bakery in Council, Alaska. There she married Gilbert A. Adams on 30 April 1906 (Council News, 5 May 1906). Their daughters Lucile and Alison were born in 1907 and 1908, respectively. Gilbert A. Adams, born in 1862 in Ohio, was a lawyer by training, but pursued a variety of occupations in Council: attorney, proprietor of the Kane House hotel, proprietor of the Boston store, and U.S. Commissioner for the Council City Precinct
