Biographical/Historical Data:
Heath Arlo Ives (1890-1972), born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, came to Katalla, Alaska, in 1907 to work as an engineer on a gas boat that ferried supplies for the Alaska Railroad. Following a dispute with a railroad foreman, he quit and moved to Cordova. There he started a small gasoline engine repair business and learned photography. In 1923 he moved to Hyder, Alaska, where set up as a commercial photographer and sold his photos as postcards. He moved to Wrangell, Alaska, in 1941, and a year later settled in nearby Petersburg, where he worked as a photographer, small engine repairman, and gunsmith until his retirement. He died in Petersburg in 1972. (From Petersburg Press, 21 Dec 1972, p. 8.)
