In 1989, Eva, her little brother Lalalilu, and their parents live in on the outskirts of Bucharest. Seven year old Lalalilu adores his sister, who is 17 and in love for the first time. She and her boyfriend Alexandru Vomicǎ accidentally break Ceausescu's statue while kissing in school. When caught, they are asked to apologize to the student body. Alex's father pressures him to do so but Eva refuses, is expelled, and transfers to technical school. There she meets Andrei, and together they plan to run away, swim the Danube, and escape from Romania.
