Reinwand and Davis talk about how Davis and his wife Bernice started out as teachers; coming to Alaska to work on a defense project near Excursion Inlet; taking Bernice to see the Mendenhall Glacier and winding up in the middle of a shooting range; taking pictures illegally; seeking a homestead site along the old Richardson Trail; building a cabin without any know-how; schooling their sons by correspondence; homestead chores; family discussions; the value of studying on one's own; selling the homestead to a development company; how Davis Subdivision became North Pole, Alaska; finding work with the Bureau of Prisons in Fairbanks; moving to Nome to work as supervisor of Nome Jail; becoming a probation officer after statehood; prospecting for gold in the summer;and unique qualities of Nome.
