Abstract:
Stan Long and Charles Pinney, both former pilots, talk about the B-26, the P-38, military flight training during WWII, B-18, flight and living conditions in the Aleutians during WWII, food for the soldiers, the lack of navigational aids, making bombing runs on Kiska and Amchitka, effectiveness of the Japanese Zeros, Colonel Eareckson, the use of pierced steel planking or "Marston matting" for runways, navigating planes up from the Lower '48 to Alaska, Bed Check Charlie, the runway built on the lagoon at Adak, the job and living conditions of the airplane mechanics, cold weather flight gear, heating systems in the planes, Major Salter, and pilots making it back after being hit by anti-aircraft fire.
