Abstract:
Sam Taguchi is interviewed by Ron Inouye on October 19 and 20, 1990 in Juneau, Alaska. Taguchi recounts growing up in Seattle, where his mother sold vegetables at Pike Place Market. He tells about his work in canneries in Alaska from 1933-1939. He moved to Juneau in 1940 to work at Mr. Fukuyama's laundry. He talks about Japanese families living in Juneau at that time, and different businesses they ran. He recalls the advent of WWII and his relocation and internment camp experience. He talks about his family and what they did during and after the war. Taguchi was an owner of City Cafe in Juneau for a number of years. He tells anecdotes about Juneau and people he knew, including political figures like Bob Bartlett and Bill Egan. He talks about other restaurants in Juneau, Alaskan Japanese he knew, his interest in basketball, U.S.-Japan relations, discrimination in Alaska, and Japanese-Americans' contributions to Alaska.
