Abstract:
On Part 1 (Tape 44), George Sundborg talks about his early life, education, career as a journalist, coming to Juneau in the late 1930s, Ernest Gruening, going to work for the National Resources Planning Board. On Part 2 (Tapes 45 & 46), George talks about the evacuation from Alaska during World War II, work with the Joint Economic Board of the United States and Canada, his appointment to the Alaska Development Board, his stint as editor of the Juneau Independent, Alaska Statehood, becoming a delegate to the Alaska Constitutional Convention, his role at the Convention, other Convention delegates who are still alive at the time of the interview, his two books, Opportunity in Alaska and Hail, Columbia, fight over taxation in Alaska, Frank Heintzleman. On Part 3 (Tapes 47 & 48), he talks about the pro and anti-statehood stances among Alaska's newspapers at the time, fish trap controversy, Bill Egan, Bill Snedden, his work for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, the Drew Pearson lawsuit, Frank Waskey, the Goldstein Building fire in Juneau, the hanging of Nelson Charles, the loss of the desk William Seward stood at during the Alaska Purchase, and his work for Senator Ernest Gruening. On Part 4 (Tape 49), George talks about Ted Stevens, the antagonism between then Senator Lyndon Johnson and Sen. Gruening over the Vietnam War, Sen. Bob Bartlett, Bartlett's relationship with Gruening, George'sview of the current state legislature, and his marriage to Mary.
