Abstract:
Frederica de Laguna talks about being told that the ancestors of the Tlingit coming from Chitina, bringing copper with them, descendants still singing some Ahtena songs, meeting the Ahtena people for the first time, Vassily George, Copper Center Pete remembering Lt. Allen, matrilineal lines, the clans, the Raven and the Wolf, organization of moieties, slides from the Copper River Valley, Felix Charlie, the cultural importance of landmarks, Long Lucy John, steam baths, Peter Charlie, birch bark cradles carried on the mother's back, Martha Jackson, Andy Ewan, dog packs for carrying things, Kitty McClellan, Adam Sanford, boats they used for travel down the Copper River, Tony Jackson, Peter Charlie's dip net, Martha Jackson's fish wheel, Enid Nicolai, use of small alder branches to spread the fish open to dry, dead-fall traps, Frank Charlie, bow and arrows, Indian potato, Vasilly Georg making her a Russian checkers game, Ahtena potlatches, Billy Douglas giving a potlatch when his wife recovered, Mt.
