Abstract:
"This catalog accompanies the 2021 exhibition at the Alaska State Museum in Juneau and traces the history of the sacred textiles known today as raven's tail and Chilkat robes. Masterfully woven by Native women from the plush white fur of mountain goats, this art was born long before the arrival of Euro-American visitors to the shores of the northern Gulf of Alaska and carries forward to the present. Robes are used in sacred ceremonies, where leaders and dancers wear them to display their clan crests, and where the spirits of the ancestors gather." -- Publisher's description, back cover
