When a scientific expedition is launched to study a mysterious alien race, the only ship available is the Nightflyer, a fully autonomous vessel manned by a single human. But Captain Royd Eris remains locked away, interacting with his passengers only as a disembodied voice--or a projected hologram no more substantial than a ghost. Yet that's not the only reason the ship seems haunted. The team's telepath, Thale Lasamer, senses another presence aboard the Nightflyer--something dangerous, volatile, and alien. Captain Eris claims to know nothing about the elusive intruder, and when someone, or something, begins killing off the expedition's members, he's unable--or unwilling--to stem the bloody tide. Only Melantha Jhirl, a genetically enhanced outcast with greater strength, stamina, and intelligence than other humans, has a chance of solving the mystery--and stopping the malevolent being that's wiping out her shipmates. But first she has to keep herself alive"--
Book
The ice dragon ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:2054099 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z Martin, George R. Few legitimate claims to the Iron Throne still exist, and the war that has turned the world into little more than a wasteland has finally burned itself out. Or so it appears. For it's not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters of the Seven Kingdoms gather. Now, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces -- some familiar, others only just appearing -- emerge from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges of the terrible times ahead. Nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages, are coming together to stake their fortunes...and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests -- but only a few are the survivors.
Electronic resource
JLC Title 245h [spoken word]
Lame of thrones : the final book in a song of hot and cold : a parody ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:5677716 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2020.
First edition.
"An affectionate but take-no-prisoners send-up of the massive literary and television franchise, Lame of Thrones offers fans a way of reentering the fictional world they have come to love and merrily explodes all of its conventions -- as well as their expectations of the characters -- to hilarious ends. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of throne"--Provided by publisher.
Book
Fuego y sangre ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:5142841 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z Martin, George R. 'When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.'--Cersei Lannister One of the great joys of Game of Thrones is strategizing what bold moves you'd make in this bloody, volatile world--from the comfort of your living room. And one of the great terrors of being a leader is knowing your real world can be just as brutal--and offices bring no comfort. Every day you're presented with opportunities and challenges, and must decide which roads to follow, which risks to confront, when to deny an opportunity and when to pursue the call to adventure. And you won't know whether you'll profit or fail while you're in the thick of it. In Win or Die: Leadership Secrets from Game of Thrones, Bruce Craven brilliantly analyzes the journeys of the best and worst leaders in Westeros, so that leaders can create their own narratives of success. Craven considers beloved characters such as Ned Stark, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and Tyrion Lannister as they make terrible decisions and fatal mistakes, but also achieve incredible victories and surprising successes, learning and growing along their (often bloody) ways. Readers will learn how to face conflict and build resilience, develop contextual and emotional intelligence, develop their vision, and more. This entertaining and accessible guide will show readers how to turn danger into opportunity, even when dragons threaten"--
Book
Fire & blood [spoken word] ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:5068264 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z Martin, George R. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel . . . and the coldest hearts. R.,
[2022]
First edition.
This is a stunning introduction to House Targaryen, the iconic family at the heart of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon. For hundreds of years, the Targaryens sat the Iron Throne of Westeros while their dragons ruled the skies. The story of the only family of dragonlords to survive Valyria's Doom is a tale of twisty politics, alliances and betrayals, and acts both noble and craven. The Rise of the Dragon chronicles the creation and growth of Targaryen power in Westeros, covering the history first told in George R. R. Martin's epic Fire & Blood, from Aegon Targaryen's conquest of Westeros to the infamous Dance of the Dragons--the bloody civil war that nearly undid Targaryen rule or good. Packed with all-new artwork, the Targaryens--and their dragons--come vividly to life in this deluxe reference book. Perfect for fans steeped in the lore of Westoros, as well as those who first meet the Targaryens in the HBO series House of the Dragon, this provides a must-hyhave overview for anyone looking to learn more about the most powerful family in the Seven Kingdoms. --
Book
George R. Using Maxent species distribution models, we modeled the amount and distribution of probable nesting habitat in the murrelet's range in the NWFP area in 1993, 1 year prior to the start of the NWFP, and 25 years later (2017). Within the higher probability nesting habitat, we then estimated the amount of contiguous habitat (core) versus the amount of habitat bounding core habitat(edge) and habitat scattered in small forest fragments (scatter). We considered this "core habitat" as the best habitat. Our models indicate that there were 1.51 million acre of higher probability nesting habitat over all lands in the murrelet's range in Washington, Oregon, and California 1 year prior to the start of the NWFP in 1993. Of this, 0.14 million acre were identified as core habitat, which we defined as intact patches of higher probability nesting habitat >5.56 acre in size. In core habitat, we expected nest predation to be relatively low and the microclimate most favorable for murrelets. Most (68 percent, or 1.04 million acre)higher probability nesting habitat in 1993 was on federally administered lands, with 0.97 million acre (66 percent) in reserved land use allocations. We estimated that non-federal lands contained 29 percent of all higher probability nesting habitat, but only 13 percent of all core habitat. Thus, the bulk of core habitat was on federal lands. We estimated a net loss of about 1.4 percent in higher probability nesting habitat across the NWFP area and1.8 percent in core habitat from 1993 to 2017. Timber harvest and wildfire were the major causes of habitat loss on federal lands since the NWFP was implemented. Timber harvest was the primary cause of loss on state and other nonfederal lands, accounting for 99 percent of all attributable losses since 1993. The NWFP has been successful in conserving higher probability nesting habitat on federal lands across the NWFP area, but has been less successful in conserving core habitat. We anticipate that losses of habitat on federal lands will continue because of fires and timber harvest. As forests mature, some of these losses maybe exceeded by recovery of currently unsuitable habitat within reserves. However, climate change offers a very real threat, and thus many gains may not be realized as the climate in the NWFP area becomes warmer, drier, and less favorable for developing forest conditions necessary for nesting murrelets. In addition, because losses of nesting habitat continue on private lands, incentives are needed to curb losses to better meet conservation objectives. "
Book
Status and trend of nesting habitat for the marbled murrelet under the Northwest Forest Plan, 1993 to 2017 ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:6324287 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z Lorenz, Teresa J.,
2021.
Electronic resource
Sleeper straddle [large print] : a novel in stories ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:6334524 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024.
Large print edition.
"An original collection of interwoven short stories set in the Wild Cards universe, where an alien virus mutates some and grants superpowers to others, created by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Game of Thrones. An alien virus ravages the world, with effects as random as a hand of cards. Those infected either draw the black queen and die, draw an ace and receive superpowers, or draw the joker and are bizarrely mutated. Croyd Crenson is the Wild Card's greatest failure-and its greatest success. Dubbed "The Sleeper," he randomly undergoes hibernations that can span weeks or even months. After each hibernation, he awakens with a new appearance and set of powers-sometimes a joker, sometimes an ace, and sometimes a combination of both-until exhaustion claims him and his next inevitable sleep shuffles the cards anew. Ever since his initial infection in 1946, he's awoken in a singular body-until now. His latest awakening has left him split into six different incarnations, each of them a self-contained piece of the original and each with a unique look and set of powers. One of them, at least, recognizes this for the the disaster that it is, and tasks the clever and elusive Tesla-a joker with ace powers-to locate and gather the remaining five versions of himself before sleep claims them again and leaves Croyd permanently fractured. What follows is a journey through Croyd's long and colorful life, through the lens of some who have encountered the world's most unusual wild carder. When Williams died in in 2000, John Lewis said of him, "Hosea Williams must be looked upon as one of the founding fathers of the new America. Thorough his actions, he helped liberate all of us." Rice's work brings to the fore the significant role that Williams played in a way that previous studies have not. While Williams has been forgotten by scholars, Rice argues that his story is more important than is typically acknowledged. Whereas Williams generally appears as a secondary figure within studies of other movement leaders, Rice provides a full examination of his life and career. This biographical treatment illuminates the entire landscape of the civil rights movement from a different vantage point, broadening the familiar geography and chronology of the Black Freedom Struggle even as it complicates our understanding of better-chronicled events and civil rights campaigns. Hosea Williams's activism in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was of central importance to the success of the larger movement. Williams's role in pressuring municipal, state, and federal government officials to ensure that African Americans' social, political, and economic rights were fully guaranteed yielded notable victories in Savannah, Georgia, St. Augustine, Florida, Selma, Alabama, and elsewhere. His tactical innovations, most notably the pioneering use of night marches, were vital to the success of several local campaigns. Williams's reputation as SCLC leader Martin Luther King Jr.'s "hammer" made him the SCLC's most effective leveraging tool during the 1960s. Hostile southern Whites resistant to change grudgingly made concessions to the SCLC if the organization agreed to withdraw Williams from their cities. This paved the way for Andrew Young, King's soft-spoken diplomat, to negotiate favorable settlements with city officials. Rice argues that Williams's grit and tactical genius, his motivational skills and ability to cultivate a reputation as one "unbossed and unbought" were critical to the success of the SCLC and the broader civil rights movement. He traces Williams's journey from the obscure periphery to the vital center of the most successful nonviolent revolution in American history, and later his effective erasure from the popular memory of that movement. Williams's story provides valuable insights into the long civil rights movement and parallels the trajectory of the modern civil rights movement, from its origins in grassroots activism to more national campaigns of the 1960s and beyond. Of particular importance is the light that Rice's biography sheds on the evolution of the Savannah movement. The civil rights movement in the South was largely built around activism in individual cities. While some of those campaigns are well-chronicled (Montgomery; Selma), others like Savannah are much less understood. Rice shows how the growth of the Savannah Movement during the 1950s and its sustained persistence in the early 1960s makes it one of the most dynamic and successful local movements of the era. This is just one facet of the of the movement that a close study of Hosea Williams helps to reveal. While magisterial studies by historians such as Adam Fairclough and David Garrow have done much to explore the inner workings of SCLC, Rice's account, focused as it is on Williams and bolstered by personal accounts from Williams and others near to him, offers a layered perspective that adds to these more King-centric narratives"--
Book
Rogues ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:4968937 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2014.
First edition.
"A thrilling collection of twenty-one original stories by an all-star list of contributors--including a new A Game of Thrones story by George R.R. Melvin L. Wells to James Baldwin, Martin Delany to Audre Lorde, and W. E. B. Du Bois to Toni Morrison. While African American political thought is inextricable from the historical movement of American political thought, its norms, and stated concerns, this volume stresses the individuality of black minds, the transnational and diasporic consciousness, and how individual speakers and writers draw on various traditions simultaneously to broaden our conception of African American political ideologies. Transformative insights on political thought and democratic theory account for the contexts and conditions of black life, and thereby deepen inquiry into nationhood and citizenship. Finally, the collection turns to remembrances of The Great Conroy, as he is lovingly titled by friends, including his eulogy."--
Book
The science of Game of Thrones : from the genetics of royal incest to the chemistry of death by molten gold--sifting fact from fantasy in the Seven Kingdoms ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:5002341 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z Keen, Helen,
2016.
First United States edition.
"Award-winning comedian and popular-science writer Helen Keen uncovers the astounding science behind the mystical, blood-soaked world of Game of Thrones, answering questions like: Is it possible to crush a person's head with your bare hands? What is memory and where is history? The questions have been shaping the hyperpolarized forms of American identity politics for the past thirty years, demanding removal of statues from public parks, freedom of speech from private schools, drumming up the sound and fury of the country's culture wars, dividing we the people into militant factions of us and them. To read three histories of America's founding, one of them composed in the nineteenth century, the others in the twentieth and twenty-first, is to travel in time to three castles in air. The must-see tourist attractions remain securely in place--Jefferson drafting the Declaration of Independence, Washington crossing the Delaware, Hamilton organizing a national bank--but as to the light in which events are to be seen, accounts differ. The histories are posed in sculptured marble or framed in Hollywood tinsel, but in no instance is the immortal American past the product or property of a country. Countries are figurative entities on the field of a flag; they don't own things. The immortal American past belongs to the people who carry it around in their heads."--Preamble.
Book
Robotic Fabrication in Architecture, Art and Design 2014 ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:5601310 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z JLC Corporate Author Rob/Arch: Robotic Fabrication in Architecture, Art, and Design (Conference) (2nd : 2014 : Ann Arbor, Mich.)
[2014]
Robotic automation has become ubiquitous in the modern manufacturing landscape, spanning an overwhelming range of processes and applications-- from small scale force-controlled grinding operations for orthopedic joints to large scale composite manufacturing of aircraft fuselages. Smart factories, seamlessly linked via industrial networks and sensing, have revolutionized mass production, allowing for intelligent, adaptive manufacturing processes across a broad spectrum of industries. Against this background, an emerging group of researchers, designers, and fabricators have begun to apply robotic technology in the pursuit of architecture, art, and design, implementing them in a range of processes and scales. Coupled with computational design tools the technology is no longer relegated to the repetitive production of the assembly line, and is instead being employed for the mass-customization of non-standard components. This radical shift in protocol has been enabled by the development of new design to production workflows and the recognition of robotic manipulators as "multi-functional" fabrication platforms, capable of being reconfigured to suit the specific needs of a process. The emerging discourse surrounding robotic fabrication seeks to question the existing norms of manufacturing and has far reaching implications for the future of how architects, artists, and designers engage with materialization processes. The eighteenth of the celebrated international symposia on Attention and Performance focused on this problem, seeking to banish or at least deconstruct the "homunculus": that conveniently intelligent but opaque agent still lurking within many theories, under the guise of a central executive or supervisory attentional system assumed to direct processes that are not "automatic."The thirty-two contributions discuss evidence from psychological experiments with healthy and brain-damaged subjects, functional imaging, electrophysiology, and computational modeling. Four sections focus on specific forms of control: of visual attention, of perception-action coupling, of task-switching and dual-task performance, and of multistep tasks. The other three sections extend the interdisciplinary approach, with chapters on the neural substrate of control, studies of control disorders, and computational simulations. The progress achieved in fractionating, localizing, and modeling control functions, and in understanding the interaction between stimulus-driven and voluntary control, takes research on control in the mind/brain to a new level of sophistication.
Electronic resource
The weird : a compendium of strange and dark stories ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:4942205 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2012, ©2011.
1st U.S. ed. 2012
An oversized anthology of dark and bizarre tales written throughout the past century includes entries by international best-sellers and award-winners, including Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, and Franz Kafka.
Book
The new encyclopedia of Southern culture. Moreover, the most widely used anthologies of black writing have established a canon based largely on current interests and priorities. Seeking to establish a broader perspective, this collection brings together a wealth of autobiographical writings, fiction, poetry, speeches, sermons, essays, and journalism that better portrays the intellectual and cultural debates, social and political struggles, and community publications and institutions that nurtured black writers from the early 1800s to the eve of the Harlem Renaissance. As editor Ajuan Mance notes, previous collections have focused mainly on writing that found a significant audience among white readers. Consequently, authors whose work appeared in African American-owned publications for a primarily black audience--such as Solomon G. Brown, Henrietta Cordelia Ray, and T. Thomas Fortune--have faded from memory. Even figures as celebrated as Frederick Douglass and Paul Laurence Dunbar are today much better known for their "cross-racial" writings than for the larger bodies of work they produced for a mostly African American readership. There has also been a tendency in modern canon making, especially in the genre of autobiography, to stress antebellum writing rather than writings produced after the Civil War and Reconstruction. Similarly, religious writings--despite the centrality of the church in the everyday lives of black readers and the interconnectedness of black spiritual and intellectual life--have not received the emphasis they deserve. Filling those critical gaps with a selection of 143 works by 65 writers, Before Harlem presents as never before an in-depth picture of the literary, aesthetic, and intellectual landscape of nineteenth-century African America and will be a valuable resource for a new generation of readers. "--
Electronic resource
Lift every voice : African American oratory, 1787-1900 ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:803571 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z ©1998.
Contains speeches on slavery, civil rights, segregation, Afro-American women, education, and other topics.
Book
Letters of note : an eclectic collection of correspondence deserving of a wider audience ent://SD_ILS/0/SD_ILS:4976699 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2024-05-08T11:27:06Z 2014.
"This collection of 125 letters offers a never-before-seen glimpse of the events and people of history--the brightest and the best, the most notorious, and the endearingly everyday. One of the great American art forms, African American poetry encompasses many kinds of verse: formal, experimental, vernacular, lyric, and protest. The anthology opens with moving testaments to the power of poetry as a means of self-assertion, as enslaved people voice their passionate resistance to slavery. This volume captures the power and beauty of this diverse tradition and its challenge to American poetry and culture. Here are all the significant movements and currents: the nineteenth-century Francophone poets known as Les Cenelles, the Chicago Renaissance that flourished around Gwendolyn Brooks, the early 1960s Umbra group, and the more recent work of writers affiliated with Cave Canem and the Dark Noise Collective. Here too are poems of singular, hard-to-classify figures: the enslaved potter David Drake, the allusive modernist Melvin B. Tolson, the Cleveland-based experimentalist Russell Atkins. The volume also features biographies of each poet and notes that illuminate cultural references and allusions to historical events-- adapted from dust jacket.
Book
