Recorded on cassette tapes in Native Iñupiaq from 1974-81, these primary source sound recordings document Iñupiaq Elders conducting what they termed the "Spirit Program." The Spirit Program were public meetings to document reminiscences of family life in small towns above the Arctic Circle, describe essential indigenous survival skills such as hunting techniques, narratives of clothing production and food preparation traditions and record long-established, orally transmitted moral maxims and principles of ethical behavior.
