Abstract:
This one-box collection contains of photocopies of George T. Emmons' unpublished manuscripts on the Tlingit, circa 1910. The originals of this manuscript are held by the American Museum of Natural History, New York. This photocopy has been produced, bound, and placed in order of creation by Emmons. Note: It appears that Frederica de Laguna did not use this version of Emmons' writing in her co-authored work The Tlingit Indians. See George T. Emmons and Frederica de Laguna, The Tlingit Indians (New York City: American Museum of Natural History, 1991).
Biographical/Historical Data:
George Thornton Emmons (June 6, 1852 - June 11, 1945) was an ethnographic photographer and a U.S. Navy Lieutenant. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1874 and in 1881 attained the master rank, in 1883 lieutenant j.g., and in 1887 lieutenant. In 1882 Emmons was stationed in Alaska and stayed in Alaska until the 1890s. Emmons took great interest in the Tlingit Indians of Alaska and wrote various articles on the Tlingit, and two books (one published posthumously) that concerned the Tlingit.
