Biographical/Historical Data:
F. Leigh Kerr worked for the Alaska Department of Health and conducted the first X-ray survey north of the Arctic Circle. He was recruited through the U.S. Public Health Service to survey and determine the extent of tuberculosis among the Native people. The survey took two years and included all villages with a population over seven. It was conducted under adverse conditions with portable equipment and local generators. Transportation depended on weather and availability (bush pilots, dog team or skin boat). An x-ray technician recruited for his skill, Leigh supervised additional x-ray technicians and was responsible for the maintenance of the x-ray equipment in the various health units. From 1952 to 1958 he continued to work for the Alaska State Department of Health as regional business manager in the Anchorage office.
