Abstract:
Michael Krauss talks about when he first came to the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the beginning of the Alaska Native Language Center, Irene Reed and Martha Teeluk and the creation of the Special topics course in Eskimo in the spring of 1961, beginning of the linguistics program, the Anthropology Department, development of the Yupik program, Alaska Native Language Program, getting an NSF grant to survey Alaska Native languages, his own work with Athabaskan in Minto, recording people at the Alaska Native Health Service hospital in Anchorage, his wife, Jane, working with Christian missionaries, concentrating his efforts on the Eyak language in the 1960s, documenting the Eyak language, the Eyak language and the Athabaskan language, working with others to attempt to implement bilingual education in Alaska schools, his year at MIT, early bilingual education program in Yupik, setting a standard for the Yupik writing system in schools, materials produced from the Eskimo Language Workshop course, his Inupiaq course, Gary Holthaus, bilingual state legislation in the early 1970s, documenting the languages, hiring Bruce Gordon to head up the Department of Linguistics and Foreign Languages, establishment of the Alaska Native Language Center, William Wood, funding for the Center, Jeff Leer, people he hired for the Center, Nor and Dick Dauenhaur, Katherine Peter, Eliza Jones, Steve and Anna Jacobson, Larry Kaplan, Etna McLean, and a second generation of people at the Center.
