In 1968, a decision was made to construct a winter haul road to the Arctic Slope. The Alaska Dept. of Highways Commissioner called for bids and when all came in too high, the department made plans to construct it with state forces. The Walter J. Hickel Highway, unofficially named the "Haul Road," was completed on March 12, 1969.
