Abstract:
Woodrow Johansen talks about the history of the Hickel Highway, the study by the Department of Highways for the construction of a route to the North Slope, the Commissioner of Highways, truckers wanting to build and maintain a winter road, construction of a winter road from Livengood to Stevens Village, the building process, building the road north of the Yukon River, construction conditions, constructing the road in the Anaktuvuk River area, bulldozing across the tussocks on the tundra, getting supplies to the project, cost of shipping fuel, dealing with dust, running motorized equipment in extreme cold conditions, the length of the road, and building ice bridges.
