Abstract:
Views of a 1971 ceremony and potlatch to raise a totem pole in Kake, Alaska. Governor William A. Egan is in several of the photographs. During the 1920's, many of the original totem poles in Kake were burned. After many years of not having totem poles, the residents of Kake organized to acquire and place the 132-foot pole in the town. Also, arrangements were made for the totem pole to be exhibited at Expo '70 (the 1970 World's Fair) held in Japan. Alaska Indian Arts, Inc. of Haines, Alaska carved the totem pole, which is located on a bluff overlooking the village.
