Abstract:
The collection includes photographs collected and/or taken by Nichols during his trip to and time in Alaska. Included are images of Alaskan Natives, camps and boats, sailing ships, steamers, the Yukon and Kobuk Rivers, placer mining activities, individuals, a hand-drawn map of the Koowak [Kobuk] River showing the winter trail of the natives and the prospecting area.
Ownership:
The collection was donated in 1985 to the Alaska State Museum by Anna Muriel Hurd, Frank Nichols' niece. The Museum transferred the collection to the Alaska Historical Library.
Biographical/Historical Data:
Frank Nichols sailed to Alaska aboard the MERMAID with the Rhode Island and Alaska Trading and Transportation Co. He landed at St. Michaels on the Seward Peninsula, and soon formed the N & A Company with several friends. They staked claims near Elkhorn Creek and other areas near Council, north of Nome.
