Biographical/Historical Data:
Barry H. Rodrigue dit Roderick is a researcher, writer and collector of Alaskan folklife who lived in Alaska for twenty years, from circa 1970 to 1990. He made a living in the maritime and fishing industries, while conducting research in rural Alaska. In the early years (1972-1978), he worked with indigenous communities on issues of archeology and heritage conservation, folklore, documentation of contemporary life, and ethnomedicine. He then expanded this work to include other ethnic groups in the North Pacific region. In order to facilitate this work, in 1976, he began Archipelago, a regional and community journal of material submitted by people from Southeast Alaska, the southern Yukon Territory, and northern British Columbia. The associated Archipelago recording project produced a large collection of regional folk music. Dr. Rodrigue currently works as an associate professor at the University of Southern Maine in Lewiston, Maine.
