Abstract:
H95-24-01 Dallia Andrew talks about the subsistence activities she remembers doing as a child, her parents living in Kukaklek, why they moved around in different seasons, her parent's reindeer herding, putting up fish in the summer, her father trapping in the winter, going to school in Kokhanok, her father commercial fishing in Bristol Bay, what their houses were made of, burning birch wood, packing firewood, using wood blankets to put out fires, Martin Sakar, Alex Gregory, and her siblings. Mike talks about his parent's reindeer herding, living on the Alagnak River, subsistence activities, the first animal he hunted by himself, trading caribou with the cannery caretaker for supplies, fur buyers coming to the village, his parents working in the canneries, gathering wood, gathering dry wood after a fire, a fire during the 1920s, marking the trees with moss to mark a trail out of the woods, Alex Andrew, Pete Sooka, influenza epidemics, learning to trap and fish from his mother, and learning to speak English.

H95-24-02 Dallia Andrew talks about learning skills from her mother, learning to help the elders, learning to sew and knit,and Russian Christmas. Mike talks about holiday gatherings, Native ice cream, family on the Alagnak River, hunting camp, hunting practices, their hunting cabin on the Alagnak River, trapping, and using different trap lines.

H95-25-01 Mike Andrew talks about using bear skins to bring rain, trapping before he was married, ice fishing, snaring ptarmigan, fishing in the river in the spring, smoking salmon with birch wood, commercial fishing in Bristol Bay, moving to Igiugig so their children could attend school, drying moose meat, drying white fish, using grass baskets to store fish, storing fish in a pit in the ground, eating white moss, and his grandfather hunting bear with an ax. Dallia Andrew talks about sharing holiday potlucks, putting up fish for the family and to feed the dogs, her children, Alec, Trefim, and Michael, caribou, the proper disposal of animal bones, avoiding starvation, using wild foods, and the changes in medical care.

H95-25-02 Mike Andrew talks about animal behavior and hunting, hunting beliefs, using all the parts of the bear, snow machines, land use practices in Katmai National Park, the Park Service cabin at Kukaklek Lake, and his grandfather, Evan Tallirpalek. Dallia Andrew talks about hunting ducks in the spring, using dog teams and ATVs, Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, and marriage.

H95-26-01 Dallia Andrew talks about Native hunting laws, not hunting during breeding time for the animals, when they hunt certain animals during the year, when they hunt bear, how bear behavior has changed, sport fishermen, and knowing where to find food during starvation times. Mike Andrew talks about fishing different species of fish from May until September, not wasting food, why they hunt bear in the spring, caribou behavior, teaching their children and grandchildren, fish traps, and predictions his elders made.
