Abstract:
Woodrow "Woody" Johansen is interviewed by Gayle Maloy in Fairbanks, Alaska on January 4, 1985. He talks about his grandfather coming to Alaska in 1867 with the Union Army; Alaska history books; the University of Alaska,Fairbanks in the 1930s; and point-driving (to thaw ground for dredging) for Dean Patty. He tells personal vignettes about his friend Bill Cashen from Douglas, Dr. Bunnell, and his (Woody's) wife, Carolyn. Johansen then tells about working with the Alaska Road Commission for 27 years, highlighting changes it's gone through and projects it's handled. He relates one project that is dear to him--building the winter road from Livengood to the Yukon River, over which an ice bridge was constructed, and then on to Sagwon in 1968-1969.
