Abstract:
On H86-118-01, Ken and Eva Kriger talk about teaching school for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Alaska in the late 1950s through the 1960s. They talk about their personal histories and educational backgrounds, coming to Elim to teach in 1958, the orientation of new teachers, the multiple roles a teacher was supposed to assume in addition to teaching, the vocational education classes Ken taught, the differences between one teacher and multi-teacher schools in rural Alaska, social activities in the village, attitudes of the villagers to traditional singing and dancing, attitudes of the villagers towards sending their kids out of town to go to high school, role of the National Guard in village life, Eva's work with the Alaska Dept. of Education in Juneau, school construction costs, teachers' quarters, and some of the people that she worked with.

On H86-118-02, Eva Kriger continues talking about some of the people that she worked with in the Dept. of Education, the differences between the state Dept. of Education and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Ken talks about his dislike of Juneau, Eva talks about the difficulty of selecting suitable teachers for rural areas, their visit to and the educational situation in Australia, the difficulties involved in being a teaching couple, and some of the Alaskan souvenirs they were given as mementos.
