Abstract:
Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) (d-2) public hearings of the Joint Federal-State Land Use Planning Commission recorded in Allakaket on May 5, 1973. Part 1 (AAF-2757) Presiding over the hearing are commissioners Harry Carter and Celia Hunter. Also in attendance are staff member Lucy Carlo, and resource team member Tom Scoter?. Introduced are Bob Stevens of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, John Kauffman of the National Park Service, Noel Granzow of the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, Vern Clapp of the U.S. Forest Service, and Tom Dean? of the Bureau of Land Management. Members of the audience include Alaska State Representative Larry Peterson?, and Koyukon Corporation President and Doyon Regional Corporation Executive Board Member Jim Huntington. Brief presentations are given by representatives of the federal agencies. Members of the audience, including Jim Huntington, question the commissioners and federal agency representatives. Part 2 (AAF-2758) Questions from the audience continue. Jim Huntington testifies (audio problems obscure portions of his testimony). A man wearing a Hughes, Alaska, jacket, whose name is obscured by poor audio, testifies. Bergman Moses, elected chief of Allakaket, testifies. Ronald Sam, elected chief of Alatna, testifies. Joe Williams begins his testimony through an interpreter. Part 3 (AAF-2759) Portions of some testimonies, especially at beginning of tape, are inaudible due to poor audio recording. Mr. Oscar? completes his testimony. Testimony is then heard from Donald Bergman, Steven Bergman, Tony Moses, Lee? Simon, Elizabeth and Irene? Bergman, Johnson Moses Sr., Sandy Hamilton, Lydia Bergman, Stella Hamilton, Moses Henzie, an unidentified woman, Jennie Williams, Mary Williams, Bob McGuire, an unidentified man speaking about wildfires and caribou migration, Robert Williams, Hazel Edwards, Duncan Williams, Andy Simon Sr., Edison Williams, Flora Bergman, and Rose Williams. Part 4 (AAF-2760) Mr. Edwards completes his testimony. Testimony is then heard from: Frank Sam; Ray Baines? or Baynes?, a school teacher and 6-year resident of Allakaket; Edward Bergman, Jr.; Wilma? Simon; Roy Nictune; Julie Simon; Pollock Simon, Sr.; William Williams; Bertha Moses; again from Ray Baines? or Baynes?; and Mary Bergman. Part 5 (AAF-2761) An unidentified man concludes his testimony. Testimony is then heard from Art Williams of Allakaket, and Representative Larry Peterson?. The commissioners and agency representatives say thank you for the hospitality of the community. A loud cheer is heard from the audience as the meeting is adjourned.
