Abstract:
Bonnie Wartes talks about her experiences in Barrow from 1951-1958 when her husband, Bill Wartes, was a Presbyterian minister there. She talks about their decision to go to Barrow, the trip there, settling in at the manse, getting to know the Inupiat, airplane crashes, the births of her children, furlough and a fund-raising lecture tour, illnesses at Barrow, home school, public school, boarding school, Bill's flying, arrival of the ship North Star, church work, interaction with the Navy and Dewline, relations with the community, community members and elders, raising her family, and other villages as part of the mission.
