Abstract:
Larry Sweet talks about his family background, secondary school, the high school principal and the Geophysical Institute tracking Sputnik, deciding to become an engineer and work for the Geophysical Institute, the college years, Larry's first job with Lockheed, leaving his job at Lockheed and moving back to Alaska, the military's involvement in science, working at the Geophysical Institute and the Geophysical Institute's mood and style, being professionals and able to figure out equipment, the effect on the family due to an intense work schedule, the sense of team work and camaraderie at the Geophysical Institute, getting involved in military programs, adventures with the military programs, the pre-rocket launch routine, the dangers of the radar beam and explanations, military project mishaps, the military looks for a new rocket launch site, preparing the Poker Flat site and stories from Greenland, the lack of leadership/responsibility within the military and the circumstances around the creation of Poker Flat Research Range, the check-up on Poker Flat progress, finishing Poker Flat Rocket Range, and concluding thoughts.
