Abstract:
On part one Lillian Walker talks about her personal background, her early life on the mink farm owned by her step father, and going to school at Holy Cross when she was thirteen years old, her opposition to the priests and sisters at the Mission trying to arrange her sister's marriage, life at the Holy Cross Mission when she was a child, the quality of education at the Mission, raising her children with discipline, how life used to be before modern conviences, her marriage, names of her children, and her husband's job as a river boat captain, the joy of joining on her husband's barge trips, the barge route, stopping in villages and seeing her old friends from the Mission, how she learned to do bead work at the Mission, helping with the Mission's garden, what Holy Cross used to look like, raising vegetables and flowers in her own family garden, raising her family at the Ghost Creek, bringing children to school, going to church in Holy Cross in four different seasons, what it was like living at Ghost Creek, why she and her family moved into Holy Cross, her work as a health aide and mid-wife in Holy Cross, why she resigned from health aide work, comparison of health aide and medical care with other regions in Alaska, her work as a social service board member, not knowing how to speak Athabascan language, when drugs first came to Holy Cross, health services that were established for substance abuse problems, how life changed in Holy Cross after alcohol and drugs came in, potlatches and native dances that were held when she was young, how cultures mixed in Holy Cross, berry picking in the summer, what she is most proud of in her life, how she learned to sing and play musical instruments, holidays celebrated at the Holy Cross Mission, celebrating Christmas at the Mission, how children with measles and tuberculosis (TB) were treated at the Mission, and special foods she learned how to make at the Mission, especially treats made during holiday celebrations.

On part two Lillian Walker talks about Easter celebration at the Holy Cross Mission, clothing worn at the Mission, games they played, her small wedding ceremony and how hard it was for her to leave the mission, importance of education and her passion towards education, taking her children out of school and teaching them at home, the importance of parents being involved with their children's education, sewing clothing for her children, the family's morning routine of getting up and getting the kids off to school, when electricity first came to Ghost Creek, and working in the laundry at the Mission.
