Abstract:
Summary: Two trial lawyers and their witnesses debate the long range future of the North Slope Haul Road and the development of Northern Alaska. Moderator Douglas McConnell oversees a debate of the question, "Should the North Slope Haul Road eventually be open to everyone as part of the Alaska Highway System?" Advocate Alan McGrath argues in the affirmative, and Advocate Hugh Fleischer argues in the negative. Comments are heard from Governor Jay Hammond. Testimony is provided by Larry Venable of the Alaska Carriers Association, miner and geologist Chuck Herbert, Roosevelt Paneak of Anaktuvuk Pass, and David Kline of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. "The Alaskan Advocates," recorded at KAKM-Studios in Anchorage on September 18, 1976, was made possible by a grant from the Alaska Humanities Forum and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
