Abstract:
Summary: Story of the training of village men from throughout Alaska between 1955 and 1960 as Alaskan Sanitation Aides to improve sanitation in remote villages. Images include aerial views of Alaska, Post Office at Shungnak village, Alaska Airlines Norseman, village residents, laboratory training and classwork at the Maynard-McDougal Memorial Hospital in Nome, class in driving well points, men making water barrels, building portable chemical toilets and incinerators, rain water collection systems, classroom work at the University of Alaska, and graduating class members; Rudy Smith, Joe Lomax, Roger Mathum, Ed Patetak, Wilbur Karmun, Roy Vincent, Oscar Nictune, and John Thomas. Additional images include Wien DC-3 departing Fairbanks International Airport, Native women gathering drinking water in buckets during winter, dog teams, children in classroom, net pulled from under ice, and Native people jigging for fish.

Information collected by Marla Statscewich, research technician for the Oral History Program, during visit of Elders to UAF in November 2011: Images include aerial views of Alaska, and Post Office at Shungnak village. The person in the clip is George Cleveland, Sophie Cleveland’s husband. Sophie Cleveland still lives in Shungnak. George Cleveland was the old postmaster in Shungnak. Kiana Village is shown after the Post Office scene.
