Recorded from original Betamax videotape and may contain playback problems. Some of the original tapes were damaged beyond recovery or missing from the collection when it arrived at UAF. Most tapes are black-and-white; some are color.
Abstract:
Discs AAF-9700 -- AAF-9702 were recorded during Day 1. AAF-9700 contents include opening comments by Vincent Nageak addressing teachings of parents, and living off the land. Additional narratives include genealogy information from Freida Elavqak of Barrow, Laurie Kimqik of Point Hope, Patrick Attungana of Point Hope, Elijah Kakinya of Anaktuvuk Pass, Toby Anashugak of Point Hope, and David Frankson of Point Hope. AAF-9701 includes Samuel Peetok speaking about the teaching of his parents, life as a reindeer herder, and learning to be a hunter. Additional narratives include genealogy of Roland Qaqatuk of Wales, Dina Frankson of Point Hope, Otis Ahkivqak of Barrow, Sisailak of Point Hope, Ida James of ?, Oliver James of ?, and Jack Aytaqnii of Gambell. AAF-9702 includes Abraham Ongook of Gambell speaking about life at Gambell on St. Lawrence Island. Additional genealogy narratives include Ben Nungasak of Barrow, Samuel Kunaknana of Nuiqsut, Walter Akpik of Barrow, and ? of Tin City.

AAF-9703 -- AAF-9707 were recorded during Day 2. AAF-9703 includes: the opening prayer and comments by Justus Mekiana, Flossie Hopson welcoming Elders. Elders speaking about their life experiences include: Freida Elivqak speaking about fish disappearing from her land, those who drifted out to sea, and Point Barrow; Don Nuyasak speaking about whaling and North Slope travel, sod huts on the Usuktug River, and hunting; Roxy Ekowana speaking about hunting areas, following caribou, changes because of oil companies, and the need to preserve hunting land; Lauri Kingik speaking about traditional travel, hunters’ laws, and land and marine mammal hunting; and Patrick Attungana speaking about the need for oil companies to understand our way of life. AAF-9704 speakers include: Patrick Attungana speaking about hunting practices of Point Hope, hunting cycle and practices, and land with sod houses in hunting areas; Vincent Nageak speaking about hunting cycles, whaling, and places to fish in times of starvation; and Sara Kunaknana speaking about learning hunting skills, hunting rules, learning from parents, changing life, and oil companies. AAF-9705 speakers include: Elijah Kakinya of Anaktuvuk Pass speaking about when game grows scarce, and family members who died of starvation; and Weir Neavana of Tagalak speaking about oil companies damaging the land, limiting drilling, and reindeer herding at Wainwright. AAF-9706 speakers include: Weir Neavana speaking about sacred prayer, hunting traditions, and giving away first catch to elders; Waldo Bodfish of Wainwright speaking about hunting cycles and different phases of whaling; Amos Morry of Anaktuvuk Pass speaking about changing caribou migration since construction of the pipeline, and animal behavior; and Samuel Kunaknana of Nuiqsut speaking about salmon and fish migration, bird migration, and migration on the Colville River.

AAF-9708 -- AAF-9711 were recorded during Day 3. AAF-9709 includes David Frankson on history of Point Hope whaling, and prophecy passed down over generations that all animals will be no more. AAF-9712 -- AAF-9716 were recorded during Day 4, AAF-9717 -- AAF-9721 were recorded during Day 5, AAF-9722--AAF-9726 were recorded during Day 5, AAF-9727 -- AAF-9734 were recorded during Day 6, AAF-9735 -- AAF-9738 were recorded during Day 7, AAF-9739 -- AAF-9742 were recorded during Day 7, AAF-9743 -- AAF-9744 were recorded during Day 7, AAF-9745 -- AAF-9749 were recorded during Day 8, AAF-9750--AAF-9751 original tapes were blank, AAF-9752 was recorded during Day 1, AAF-9753--AAF-9754 original tapes are missing, AAF-9755 was labeled last dance, AAF-9756 -- AAF-9757 was labeled pot luck and dancing.
