Abstract:
ORAL HISTORY 95-71-04 PT. 1. Henra Sundt talks about coming from Norway by steamship to New York, traveling to Seattle and Cordova, marrying her husband in Cordova, taking the train to Chitina, Oscar Bridman, traveling to Gakona by a 1928 model A truck, Slim McMann, the conditions of the road, stopping in Gulkana, John Crosson, her husband, Arnie Sundt, her husband working as a mining engineer, the town of Chitina, Arnie working as postmaster in Gakona from 1926-1946, Mrs. Erickson helping her, learning Swedish from a neighbor in Norway, learning English from newspapers, the two Norwegians staying with them in the winter, activities her first winter, the men cutting wood in the winter, dogmushing to Gulkana by herself to visit with Mrs. Griffith, Ed Dorns, walking over the pass to Slate Creek Mine, crossing the Gakona River on horse, Al Norwood, bush pilots from Copper Center, Gillam, Noel Wien, Bob Reeve, holidays at Gakona, getting supplies in the fall, the highways being built during WW II, her husband coming to Alaska, Yea & Angler Mining Company, her husband traveling to New York to get a lease on the mine on Slate Creek and taking over the lodge at Gakona, her husband dealing with a corrupt mine manager, and the death of her husband.

Henra Sundt talks about paintings in the lodge by Mrs. Cromrine, Josephine Cromrine, Ted Lambert, Ziegler, the artists staying in cabins at Gakona, Ted Lambert moving to Naknek and Fairbanks, running the lodge after her husband died, getting a school built in Gakona, the road to Gakona, court case about her land, the state buying her land, suicide at the lodge, Charlie Anderson, burial in the gravel pit, a prospector who died at the lodge, Dr. Gillespie, road construction and moving a grave, Indian burial customs, changes with the burial customs after missionaries, the school in Copper Center for the Natives, Henry Bell, and the Natives predicting the weather.
