Abstract:
The Simon J. Newcomb Papers consist of photographs, negatives, papers, reports, and diaries relating to archaeological expeditions in the Kobuk River region, Alaska, with J. Louis Giddings during the 1940s and to the Ungava Project, an effort to establish logging on the George River in northern in Québec in 1959. Of particular interest are journals kept by Newcomb kept during the 1941 and 1944-1946 seasons. They include discussions of daily activities, weather, progress of the archaeological digs, results of surveys, and supply lists.
Biographical/Historical Data:
Simon John "Jack" Newcomb graduated from the University of Alaska at Fairbanks in 1942. He played hockey as a student and was associated with the Anthropology Department. He died in his hometown of Delta, British Columbia, in 1994.
