Biographical/Historical Data:
Ethel Washington (1889-1967) was an Inupiaq Eskimo doll maker from Kotzebue, Alaska. Utilizing a talent for carving and skin sewing, she produced dolls depicting Eskimo dress and culture. She was one of the first doll makers to use wooden heads, mostly of birch. She also used bits of skin, sinew, and fur. For accessories she made spears, carved wooden bows and spoons, and wove small Kobuk River birch baskets. Ethel Washington's dolls gained her wide acclaim, both in and outside of Alaska.
