Abstract:
This collection consists of a typewritten diary titled "Expedition to explore Alaska, 1885" written by A.V. Zane. Zane, along with companions Socoloff and Riley, explored Alaska by dog sled in 1885. Their expedition began in Fort Cosmos, a site established near what is now the village of Shungnak. The trio traveled towards Nulato. They headed southeast and then southwest, eventually returning to Nulato by following the Yukon River, with the intent to head back towards Fort Cosmos. They camped and stayed in the residences of natives and traders along their route. Zane recorded temperatures and other details of their travel from January-February 1885.
