Abstract:
Sig Wien talks about his family, growing up in Minnesota, Noel Wien, working as a mechanic, his flight training, the family business, Barrow, Nome, giving up flying when he became president of the airline, the history of Wien Alaska Airlines, Fokker airplanes, Ralph Wien, Fritz Wien, getting the first contract to fly the mail, Ralph's accident at Kotzebue, the types of aircraft used in Alaska, finding the ideal aircraft for Bush flying, Andy Anderson, the lack of airfields in the Bush, almost losing a float plane at Cross Island, Phil St. Clair, the first commercial flight between Fairbanks and Nome, Ruby, a story about Noel Wien's first flight from Wiseman to Fairbanks, losing oil pressure on a flight from Diomede Island, Will Roger's aircraft accident near Barrow, and navigation using rivers and mountains.
