Abstract:

Justus Mekiana talks about his family history, his paternal grandfather's travel, Maptigak, Colville River, Killik River, people moving to Barter Island when there was starvation inland, the Sheenjek River, traveling from Barter Island in 1934 with his family, stopping at Brownlow Point, Henry Chamberlain, constructing snow walls around their tent, stopping at Oliktok, his uncles, Wilbert and Nathaniel Morry, Old Man Morry, the trading post at Nuiqsut, following Simon Paneak and others to the Killik River in 1939, going to the Kobuk in 1943 with Frank Rulland, Tulugak Lake, having groceries freighted in, requesting to have a post office established at Anaktuvuk, his father working as the postmaster, summer school, having a school established at Anaktuvuk Pass, the problem of fuel in the winter, Gates of the Arctic National Park, Rachel Mekiana, Riley Mekiana, Molly Mekiana, Doris Mekiana, his mother's death in 1946, his stepmother, Rebecca Mekiana, Joseph Mekiana, David Mekiana, Cyrus Mekiana, Ethel Mekiana, and his children, Myrtle, Kenny, Rachel, Judy, Victor and Susan Mekiana.
