Abstract:
Justus Mekiana talks about his grandparents, Maptigak Morry, the people living on the coast between Barter Island and Barrow, reindeer herders, listening to stories at night, Jack Smith, Beechey Point, his uncle's store, the types of food and cloth that his uncle sold, how his uncle got his supplies, Simon Paneak, the sod house they lived in, hunting seals at the mouth of the Colville River, catching ling cod during the winter, his father owning some of the reindeer herd, traveling away from the Colville to hunt caribou, trading white fox pelts, Al Wright, the small sailboat they used, the different games he played when he was a young boy, learning from listening to his elders, his first rifle and getting his first caribou, Homer Mekiana, John Morry, Stephan Chris, learning to write from his maternal grandmother, Frank Rulland, church services, playing poker, whalers bringing alcohol into the communities, and using mail-order catalogs.
