Abstract:
Justus Mekiana talks about his father writing in his diary every evening, Rachel writing in the diary, the different types of storytelling, a story about warfare between the Nunamiut and the Indians, trading in the spring and the fall, Bettles, Kobuk, what they were paid for wolf bounties, not returning to the Killik River except for hunting after they settled in the Anaktuvuk Pass area, naming children, his father trading fox pelts at Ft. Yukon, his grandfather teaching his father how to hunt for sheep, girls learning from their mothers, new arrivals learning from everyone in the village in the past, traveling from the Colville River region to the Killik River region by dog team, heating up rocks to warm sod houses, following your father-in-law's family after a man married, the different type of dwellings they made for winter, insulating the house with snow, moving up to the Killik in 1939, Simon Paneak, Maptigak, John Morry, Billy Morry, using snowshoes to create a trail for the dog sleds, keeping a clean camp, meeting up with Frank Rulland and Elijah Kakinya in the Killik, leaving notes behind about their travel plans, seeing mountains for the first time in the Killik, Ben Ahgook, Homer Mekiana, Elijah Kakinya, and Peter Morry going down to Beechey Point for trading, John Morry, Frank Rulland and Billy Morry traveling to the Kobuk, Nelson Chris, hunting caribou in the Killik in the spring, the family groups going to different areas to hunt in the Killik, not staying in one place too long, learning how to hunt sheep from his grandfather, making a pair of snowshoes for Sig Wien, using a bow and arrow when he was a young boy, setting snares for ptarmigan, fishing in the Killik in the summer, making hooks from bear claws and ivory, moving to the Kobuk in 1943, and hunting with Amos Morry.
