Abstract:
Justus Mekiana talks about children traveling in sleds or being carried by their mothers on the journey from the Colville River to the Killik River, a typical day of travel, the men putting up the itchalik, the type of stove they used inside the itchalik, crossing the Colville River in the winter, Elijah Kakinya, Frank Rulland, moving around in the Killik area to find caribou, staying with Maptigak's family, celebrating Christmas, John Morry, Simon Paneak, Oliktok, Arctic John, Old Man Morry and Maptigak composing songs for Christmas, using caribou skin for the tops of drums, his father's phonograph, getting a radio in 1942, learning about the war in 1941 while they were in Kobuk, his father getting news about the war from magazines before they had a radio, a shortage of gun shells during the war, his first successful caribou and sheep hunts, learning to trap from his father, trapping wolves, collecting bounty money for wolves, storing the itchalik and sleds during the summer, using a canvas tent during the summer, using their dogs to haul the tent and poles, making and using a walking stick, using a telescope, what the inside of an itchalik looked like, using caribou skins for constructing the itchalik, and the types of lamps they used inside their tent.
