Abstract:
Justus Mekiana talks about his family surname, using single names in earlier days, where things were kept inside the itchalik, where the children slept in the tent, how an Eskimo lamp was constructed and used, using caribou grease inside the lamp, the summer tent, drinking water, moose in the Killik, killing his first bear, Bill Morry, his grandfather, Maptigak, telling him how to hunt bears, using bear hides for the door on the itchalik, rabbits in the Killik, the type of clothing they wore when they were living in the Killik, the first time he went to Kobuk, his father working at an asbestos mine in the Kobuk region, hunting muskrat when they lived on the Kobuk, using willow and caribou skin to construct umiaks, fishing while they were living on the Kobuk, his sisters attending school in Shungnak, Long Beach, trapping in the winter, his mother wanting to return to the Killik, his father joining the National Guard while they were at Kobuk, Noatak, Harry Brown, Archie Ferguson bringing the mail to Long Beach, Joe Sun, the types of merchandise at Harry Brown's trading post, and his grandfather trading with the people in Kobuk.
