Abstract:
H97-65-37 SIDE A Justus Mekiana talks about children listening and learning from their elders, what kind of advice he gives his children, Grant Spearman collecting information about how people used to live in the area many years ago, making a tape about a wolf story that was broadcast on the radio, his mother telling him how to treat his future wife, the problem of alcohol in the village, talking to his children about hunting, teaching his sons to shoot, taking his children to Willow Lake when they were young, Bill Morry, losing a lot of traditional information, telling his children about the Killik, making water from snow without matches, making snow caves for emergency shelter, Danny Hugo, Kenny Mekiana, Amos Morry, the impact of CBs on the village, and teaching at the school.

H97-65-37 SIDE B Justus talks about learning about medicinal plants from Kobuk people, the types of traditional information he taught in the school, teaching the students to write in Inupiaq, taking the high school students out in the spring for traditional education camp, living together without a leader in the old days, the community tent used for dancing and eating, what he takes on an Argo when he camps, the type of things they carried when they packed with dogs, what they carried when they hunted, feeding their dogs, slowly feeding people after they haven't had anything to eat for a while, eating ptarmigan, firefighting, constructing the first airstrip in the village, collecting mice and weasels for Bob Rausch, and learning English from Pat O'Connell and Carl Hickelman.
